Voter Registration

Are you registered to vote? Do you want to change your party, your address, your name? To Register to Vote, You Must:
1. Be a citizen of the United States.
2. Be 18 years of age by the day of the election in which you want to vote.
3. Be a resident of the county for at least 30 days before the election.
4. Not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction.
5. Not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

How Do I Register?

You can obtain a mail registration form by calling 1-800-FOR-VOTE or your County Board of Elections. Forms are also available at most government offices, post offices and libraries. Complete the form and mail it to your County Board of Elections. You may also register in person at your County Board of Elections. You need to re-register to vote if:

you move out of the county
change your name
change your party enrollment

Other Voter Service

Prior to election, The League of Women Voters of the North Country works with the Clinton and Essex Counties' Boards of Elections and publishes through the League of Women Voters proprietary website,, candidates for town, county, state and federal elected offices. For highly contested races we ask candidates to submit bio and platform issue information directly onto the website. We would like to thank all candidates who choose to participate in this voter service which contributes to our vibrant democratic form of government.

The League of Women Voters of the North Country upon request also sponsors Meet the Candidate Forums/Debates through out Clinton and Essex Counties for local candidates and regularly co-sponsors high profile debates with Mountain Lake Public Broadcasting and Plattsburgh State University.

Information on Writing to Your Elected Representatives

Elected officials need to know what their constituents want them to do. If you wonder whether it is worthwhile to communicate your views, remember others who disagree with you are doing so constantly. Letters, except form letters, are remarkably effective. Identify yourself and the bill (by number or title if possible), problem or issue. Write early in the session if you have ideas you want incorporated in legislation.
